The Water of Life was the name given by many writers to a body of living water found on the planet Karwen. It took the form of a pool at the base of a waterfall in a forest clearing. Astark's Archanum Planetarum mentioned Karwen as the home of dangerous living water, and urged travellers to keep away. Unfortunately a mistranslation of the phrase 'living water' as 'Water of Life' lead many seekers of eternal youth to their doom. When the water caught them, their bodies at first appeared to lie still under the water, apparently unharmed. Over time their bodies would rot, or possibly be digested, leaving only bones, while their minds would live on within the water. Most would experience despair and ultimately madness.

Cally was able to free Vila (who had gone in search of immortality), as well as Tarrant and Grant (who had gone in search of Vila), from the Water using telepathy, but could not help those whose bodies were gone. The crew of the Liberator were able to kill some of the Water by boiling it.
